Reimagine Our Future in Central Appalachia Together
What a year, what a year! We hope that you and yours are safe and healthy.We didn’t send out a spring appeal, because that was at the very beginning of the shelter in place order due to the COVID epidemic. Then there were the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many more that outraged us. We marched and protested against racial injustice and for police reform. And most recently, the election - where we saw attempts of voter suppression and intimidation, and the undermining of the democratic process by questioning the legitimacy of some votes.In the midst of this, folks faced eviction, others were deemed as essential workers who put their lives at risk without hazard pay. Many children went hungry because school was cancelled. Some of them struggled with distant learning and adults struggled with working from home without equitable access to the internet. There were those who lost their jobs and are struggling to meet their family’s basic needs.2020 has exposed many of the broken systems Appalachian Community Fund grantees have been working to change since our inception. We honor the lives lost and those deeply affected by this epidemic and this time.Even though we are here, we cannot lose sight of what we have been working toward.If there ever was a time for Change, not Charity, the time is now.We believe that there are parts of this vision that move you.
Reimaging our FutureOur vision is to work for the day
- when Appalachia’s land, air and water are safe from destruction and contamination;
- where the economy is stable, strong, and provides diverse employment opportunities for all people;
- where government and industry are accountable to human needs without exploitation of people and their health;
- where justice, equity, appreciation of diversity and celebration of our common humanity replace racism, sexism, heterosexism and other “isms”;
- where wealth and resources are shared equally;
- where all children grow up free from hatred and violence;
- and where justice overcomes oppression in any form.
Here is a link to our most recent Annual Report to show you that despite it all, we continue to fight the good fight.
