OUR NEWEST COHORTCulture and Community Care
The organizations in the cohort are the heartbeat of Central Appalachia, and they share a powerful common thread: they are all homegrown and community-led.
While their specific missions range from preserving history to providing mutual aid, they are united by these core strengths:
Preserving Local Legacy: They serve as keepers of Appalachian history—specifically the stories of Black, Asian, and working-class communities—ensuring our diverse heritage is never forgotten.
Creating Welcoming Spaces: Each group provides a physical or social "anchor" where neighbors can gather, find support, and feel a true sense of belonging.
Building Local Power: Rather than waiting for outside solutions, these leaders use their own "mountain wisdom" to create opportunities and solve problems from the ground up.
Strengthening Connection: They are dedicated to weaving a tighter social fabric, proving that when we invest in each other, we build a more resilient future for all of Appalachia.
