FOCIS Giving Circle
The FOCIS Giving Circle honors the legacy of the Federation of Communities in Service by providing direct support to grassroots projects that strengthen community bonds and foster local self-determination across the region.
Building Community Legacy
The FOCIS Giving Circle is a unique partnership within the Appalachian Community Fund that celebrates a long history of service and solidarity in our mountains. Grounded in the principle of "Change, Not Charity," this fund supports community-led initiatives that are building a more connected and resilient Appalachia.
By pooling resources from dedicated donors, the FOCIS Giving Circle invests in the people and projects that make our region a vibrant place to live and work. Whether it is supporting local food systems, preserving cultural heritage, or creating new educational opportunities, this fund empowers neighbors to lead the way in shaping their own futures.
Historical Impact of FOCIS
The Federation of Communities in Service (FOCIS) was founded by former Glenmary sisters in Appalachia, dedicated to serving rural, impoverished communities while maintaining communal living, celibacy, and service ideals. It focused on projects such as the arts, education (University Without Walls), and community development, leaving a significant historical record in the East Tennessee State University archives.
Grants were awarded every other year, by invitation only, from FOCIS members.
