Starting Movements, Sparking Change

The Appalachian Hero Award is presented to individuals or organizations in Central Appalachia who have made a substantial contribution to the social justice movement.

Awardees receive $100 for a social change organization of their choosing.

Appalachian Heroes are individuals or organizations that:

  • demonstrate leadership and a long-standing commitment to social justice in the region; or

  • mobilize communities around critical community issues; or

  • work to leverage assets or have made a significant financial commitment and investment to the region through ACF; or

  • are an emerging leader (under age 25) having shown leadership, vision, and courage in addressing injustices, or having organized other young people to

  • address larger issues such as LGBTQ equity and rights, bullying, racism, etc.
