Home   Ways to Give

Now, more than ever, the organizations and efforts supported by ACF are needed for their work on behalf of communities, the environment, job opportunities, health, children, youth, and those left out and left behind. ACF offers a way for everyone who cares about justice and Appalachia to pool resources in order to provide the critical support organizations need now, and in the future, to build effective social movements for change.

Our grantees rely on the support of the Appalachian Community Fund – and the Appalachian Community Fund relies on you, our community of donors. By making a gift to ACF you are joining a growing community of people helping to positively transform systems of inequity. ACF donors generously support social justice with annual contributions that range from $3 – $36,000. Every size gift matters. Every gift is an important investment in change!

We make supporting social change in Central Appalachia as easy as possible. Here are some of the ways you can give:

You can create a lasting tribute to a friend or a loved one by giving a memorial gift to ACF. You can also honor special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and special ceremonies for people you care about with a gift made in their name to ACF.

Give a Gift of Stock or Other Securities

Donating stock is a great way to put stock or other securities that you don’t need or no longer want to keep to use for social change. By gifting appreciated securities you can take a tax deduction for the full market value of appreciated stock, bonds and other kinds of securities that you have held for over a year without an obligation to pay capital gains taxes. This means you can give more to social change philanthropy!

Please consult your investment or tax advisors about the amount and type of securities you wish to donate to ACF.

When you are ready to make a transfer, please use our stock donation form (or you may mail or fax a letter with the same information to our office.) The following information will help your broker facilitate an electronic transfer of stock to ACF:

Join an Employee Matching Gift Program

Many employers will match charitable donations made by their employees (often on a 1:1 or even 2:1 basis). If your employer has such a program, you can double or even triple the size of your gift to ACF. Contact the Human Resources or Public Affairs office where you work to find out if your employer offers such a program. ACF is a member of Community Shares of Tennessee, and many of ACF’s Tennessee supporters designate their workplace giving to ACF through Community Shares.

Use your Appalachian WILL Power

Leave a Legacy for Change. The people who have joined the Appalachian WILL Power Legacy Circle have made a lasting commitment to social change by including ACF in their Wills to ensure the long-term stability and strength of the Fund and to leave a legacy of their vision and values for democracy.

After providing for your family and friends, you can use your Will to continue support social change work that is important to you. In addition, by making a planned gift, you may be able to leave more to loved ones free of estate and gift taxes.

There are several ways you and leave a gift to ACF through your Will or living trust. For example, you can:

  • Leave a specific dollar amount;
  • Leave the remainder of your estate; or
  • Designate ACF as the residual beneficiary of all or a percentage of your estate after other bequests have been made.

We would be honored by your membership in the Appalachian WILL Power Legacy Circle and to be a part of your legacy!

Your professional advisors should be able to suggest the best ways for you to maximize your tax savings through such a gift to ACF to be able to leave more to your loved ones and charity.

Wedding, Commitment, Baby and Birthday Registry at ACF

Many people who already have the household, baby, and personal items they need choose to suggest shower and party guests make a donation in their name to ACF in lieu of or in addition to other gifts. Using ACF as your gift registry is a great way to both honor your special occasions and address social inequalities. Depending on the total amount gifted, ACF staff will work with you to establish either a donor-advised fund, a field of interest fund, or to include contributions in your name in the next round of grantmaking. ACF can provide you with a gift registry card template, and we accept on-line donations.

Open a Field of Interest or Donor-Advised Fund

If you want to make an annual contribution of $5,000 or more and have a very specific focus for the issues or organizations you wish to support, you could create a field of interest fund or consider opening a donor-advised fund. These funds are great ways to champion the specific causes which are especially important to you while also receiving the administrative support and expertise of ACF’s staff and board. Contributing to ACF’s general fund, a field of interest fund, or creating your own fund can simplify your giving process and further your personal vision for social change grantmaking. Please contact us to find out more about establishing a field of interest or donor-advised fund.
